Electrostatics
Chapter Summary
Electrostatics deals with the study of electric charges at rest, their properties, and the forces between them. The fundamental law governing these charges is Coulomb's Law, which states that the electrostatic force between two point charges is directly proportional to the product of their magnitudes and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them ($F = k \frac{q_1 q_2}{r^2}$). In board exams, you are frequently tested on numerical problems using this formula, as well as conceptual questions regarding how changing the distance or medium affects the electrostatic force.
Another crucial concept is the Electric Field and Electric Intensity ($E = \frac{F}{q}$), defined as the electrostatic force experienced by a unit positive test charge. Students must also understand Electrostatic Induction, a process by which an uncharged body is charged by bringing a charged body near it without physical contact. This principle forms the working basis of the Gold Leaf Electroscope, a sensitive instrument used to detect the presence and nature (positive or negative) of a charge—a hot-favorite topic for short-answer questions in BISE exams.
Finally, the chapter covers Capacitors and Capacitance. A capacitor is an energy-storage device consisting of two parallel plates separated by an insulator (dielectric). Its ability to store charge is known as capacitance, measured in Farads ($C = \frac{Q}{V}$). Board exams consistently feature derivations and numericals on the combination of capacitors—both in series ($\frac{1}{C_{eq}} = \frac{1}{C_1} + \frac{1}{C_2} + \dots$) and in parallel ($C_{eq} = C_1 + C_2 + \dots$). Additionally, practical applications and hazards of static electricity, such as lightning and photocopiers, are important for conceptual sections.
