Translation (Urdu to English)

Translation from Urdu to English is a high-scoring, compulsory question in the Class 11 (HSSC-I) English board exams, usually carrying 15 marks. Examiners test your command of tenses, vocabulary, and sentence structure (syntax). Unlike Urdu, which follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order, English strictly follows a Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) structure. Mastering this structural shift is the first and most crucial step toward producing accurate translations.

A successful translation relies heavily on the correct identification and application of all twelve tenses, alongside modal verbs (can, could, should, must) and conditional sentences. Pay special attention to tricky Urdu structures such as ne (agent marker in past indefinite), ko (used for obligations like parhna parha), and continuous actions using raha hai/raha tha. Instead of attempting a literal, word-for-word translation—which often leads to grammatical errors—focus on conveying the core sense and context of the Urdu paragraph into idiomatic English.

In the BISE board exams, passages are typically narrative, descriptive, or socio-cultural, often featuring common idioms, proverbs (masalain), and daily-life scenarios. To secure maximum marks, expand your vocabulary regarding contemporary issues, patriotism, education, and moral values. Always revise your translated draft to check for subject-verb agreement, correct use of articles (a, an, the), and proper punctuation, as minor spelling or grammatical slips can easily cost valuable marks.
