Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Building
Chapter Summary
Reading comprehension in BISE board exams is designed to test a student's ability to extract information, analyze context, and infer meaning from unseen or textbook-based passages. To excel, students must practice active reading by first skimming the passage for the general theme and then scanning for specific details, keywords, and dates. Wh- questions (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How) form the core of comprehension assessments. When answering these questions, students should write concise, precise answers in their own words rather than blindly copying long sentences from the text, ensuring they match the tense of the question.
Another critical component tested by the board is contextual vocabulary and summary writing. Examiners frequently ask students to find synonyms, antonyms, or meanings of underlined words from the passage. Success here relies on using contextual clues—surrounding words and sentence structure—to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar terms. Additionally, students are often required to summarize a paragraph or passage. A good summary must be brief, objective, and capture only the main ideas while omitting minor details, examples, and personal opinions.
To secure maximum marks in the vocabulary section, students should also thoroughly prepare textbook exercises covering affixes (prefixes and suffixes), root words, collocations, and homophones. Board papers regularly feature questions on word formation, such as converting nouns into adjectives or verbs into nouns. Mastering these structural patterns, alongside regular practice of past-paper comprehension passages, will build the accuracy and time-management skills required to excel in the Class 10 English examination.
