Introduction to Computer Systems

Chapter Summary

A Computer System is a programmable electronic device designed to accept data (raw facts and figures), process it according to stored instructions, and produce meaningful information (processed data). The fundamental architecture of a computer is divided into two primary components: Hardware and Software. Hardware refers to the tangible, physical equipment of the computer system, while software consists of the intangible sets of instructions, or programs, that direct the hardware on how to perform specific tasks. Board examiners frequently test the distinction between these two components, as well as their interdependent nature in forming a complete computing environment.

The physical hardware architecture is broadly classified into three main units: the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Memory, and Input/Output (I/O) Devices. Often referred to as the "brain" of the computer, the CPU is further subdivided into the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) for performing mathematical calculations and logical comparisons, the Control Unit (CU) for directing the flow of data and execution of instructions, and Registers for high-speed temporary storage. Memory is categorized into Primary Memory (such as RAM and ROM), which is volatile and directly accessible by the CPU, and Secondary Memory (such as hard drives and SSDs), which provides non-volatile, long-term data storage. Input devices (like keyboards and mice) and output devices (like monitors and printers) serve as the interface between the user and the computer system.

Software is broadly categorized into System Software and Application Software. System software—most notably the Operating System (OS)—acts as an intermediary between the user, application programs, and computer hardware, managing system resources and providing a user interface. Application software, on the other hand, is designed to help users perform specific productive or recreational tasks, ranging from word processors to database management systems. Understanding this hierarchical classification of both hardware and software is essential for scoring well in both short-answer and long-form board exam questions related to computer organization.
