Solving a Biological Problem

35 min read

Chapter Summary

Biology is an experimental science that relies on a systematic approach to understand living organisms. The Biological Method is the scientific procedure adopted by biologists to solve biological problems, consisting of a series of sequential steps. It begins with the recognition of a Biological Problem, followed by making careful Observations using the five senses, which can be quantitative (measurable) or qualitative (descriptive).

Based on these observations, a biologist formulates a Hypothesis, which is a tentative explanation of the observation that must be testable and falsifiable. From the hypothesis, logical deductions (if-then statements) are drawn, leading to Experimentation. Experiments are designed to test the deductions by comparing Experimental Groups with Control Groups to ensure reliable results.

Data collected from experiments is organized into tables, graphs, and maps, and then subjected to Statistical Analysis (using ratios and proportions) to draw valid conclusions. When a hypothesis is repeatedly tested and supported by extensive data, it becomes a Theory. If a theory survives rigorous doubt and universally holds true without any exceptions, it is elevated to the status of a Law or Principle (such as Mendel's laws of inheritance).

A classic historical example frequently tested in BISE board exams is the study of Malaria, which demonstrates the practical application of this method. Through the biological method, scientists identified Plasmodium as the causative agent of malaria and proved that it is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes, transforming superstition and miasma theories into verified scientific fact.
