Biodiversity
Chapter Summary
Biodiversity is defined as the variety and variability of life on Earth, encompassing genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. For Class 9 BISE board exams, it is crucial to understand that biodiversity is not evenly distributed; it is richest in the tropics near the equator due to favorable climates and abundant resources. Pakistan possesses a rich biodiversity across diverse ecological zones, ranging from the northern alpine forests to the southern mangroves and deserts, making the protection of these natural habitats vital for ecological balance.
To make the study of millions of species manageable, biologists use classification, which aims to determine evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) and group organisms based on shared characteristics. The foundation of modern classification is the Two-Kingdom system (proposed by Carl Linnaeus), which later evolved into the Five-Kingdom system proposed by Robert Whittaker in 1969. Whittaker’s system classifies organisms into Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia based on their cellular organization (prokaryotic vs. eukaryotic) and modes of nutrition (autotrophic vs. heterotrophic).
A key concept frequently tested in board exams is Binomial Nomenclature, the formal system of naming species introduced by Carl Linnaeus. In this system, every organism is given a two-part scientific name: the first part is the genus (capitalized) and the second is the species name or specific epithet (uncapitalized), both of which must be italicized when printed or underlined when handwritten (e.g., Homo sapiens). Understanding the taxonomic hierarchy—from Species up to Kingdom—is essential for scoring high marks in short and long questions.
Finally, students must focus on the threats to biodiversity, primarily caused by human activities such as deforestation, habitat destruction, overhunting, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species. The rapid loss of species leads to disrupted food webs and the loss of potential medical and agricultural resources. Consequently, conservation efforts such as establishing national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and passing strict legislation are vital topics heavily emphasized in BISE board papers.
