20 Debate Topics for College Students (With Arguments for Both Sides)
Most debate topic lists give you a title and leave you on your own. That’s the easy part. The hard part is figuring out what each side would actually say.
So here are 20 topics, each with one solid argument for and one against, to get you started. Pick one, then build it out.
Technology
1. AI tools should be allowed in university exams.
For: Workplaces use AI every day, so exams should test how well students use it.
Against: Exams measure what you understand. AI blurs that completely.
2. Social media platforms should verify every user’s identity.
For: Real names reduce harassment and fake news.
Against: Anonymity protects whistleblowers, activists and vulnerable people.
3. Children under 13 should not own smartphones.
For: Early phone use is linked to poor sleep and attention.
Against: Phones keep children safe and connected to family.
4. Remote work is better than office work.
For: No commute, more flexibility, wider hiring.
Against: Juniors learn far less without colleagues around them.
5. Video games should count as a sport.
For: Esports need strategy, reflexes and teamwork, and draw huge audiences.
Against: Sport should involve physical effort and fitness.
Education
6. Attendance should not count towards grades.
For: Adults should be judged on results, not presence.
Against: Class discussion is part of learning.
7. Board exams should be replaced by continuous assessment.

10. Students should grade their teachers.
For: Feedback improves teaching.
Against: Students may reward easy marking over good teaching.
Society

Environment and science
16. Plastic bags should be banned completely.

Against: Tips reward good service.
How to build a winning case
- Pick three strong arguments, not six weak ones.
- Back each one with evidence: a statistic, a study or a real example.
- Prepare rebuttals. Write down the other side’s best three points and your answer to each.
- Finish with impact. Tell the judges why your side matters more.
When you have your topic, the Debate Argument Generator builds out arguments and likely rebuttals for either side, which is great for practice rounds. Turn your best points into a spoken opening with the AI Speech Writer, then check your facts before you step up. Judges always notice an unchecked statistic.
